How this works out the estimate
- Federal income tax uses the IRS percentage method for a Form W-4 from 2020 or later (Publication 15-T, Worksheet 1A).
- Virginia income tax uses Virginia Tax's withholding formula. Virginia cities and counties don't have their own income tax.
- Social Security and Medicare are worked out on the whole paycheck. The calculator doesn't stop Social Security at the yearly wage limit or add the extra Medicare tax on high wages.
- Health insurance, other pre-tax benefits and wage garnishments aren't included.
Tax tables last checked against IRS and Virginia Tax sources on 7 October 2026.
